Current news about Mukhyamantri- Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana 2025:

The Maharashtra government is preparing to reevaluate the beneficiaries of the Ladki Behen Yojana, a welfare scheme launched ahead of the recently held state elections. Women currently receiving ₹1,500 monthly under this initiative will now need to meet certain eligibility requirements to keep receiving these benefits. This decision comes as the financial strain of the scheme on the State’s budget continues to grow.

The BJP-led coalition had rolled out the Ladki Bahin Scheme as part of an extensive welfare package unveiled during its last budget. In an effort to attract voters, Finance Minister Ajit Pawar presented a budget of ₹6,12,293 crore, which included provisions for three free LPG cylinders annually for families below the poverty line, free electricity for farmers, and the monthly stipend of ₹1,500 for women under the Ladki Bahin Yojana.

This scheme was crucial to the BJP alliance’s campaign during the State elections, significantly aiding the ruling coalition in achieving a strong victory. With 2.47 crore women benefiting from the program, it became a key element of the government’s outreach strategy. However, the financial implications of maintaining the scheme have been substantial, with an estimated annual cost of ₹46,000 crore. In response to the increasing financial burden, the State government is now looking to limit the number of beneficiaries by implementing stricter eligibility standards.

Under the Mukhyamantri- Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana, women aged 21 to 65 who qualify receive ₹1,500 each month. During the election campaign, former Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had pledged to increase this amount to ₹3,000 per month if the government remained in power. While the scheme has played a significant role in the government’s electoral achievements, experts are voicing concerns regarding its sustainability in the long run.

To address these issues, the government has opted to review the list of beneficiaries to ensure that only those who meet the criteria continue to receive support. Women and Child Welfare Minister Aditi Tatkare has confirmed that the review process is underway following recent reports. In June 2024, the Mahayuti government introduced the Ladki Bahin scheme, strategically targeting voters ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. This initiative promises women from families with an annual income below ₹2.5 lakh a monthly support of ₹1500, with a pledge to raise it to ₹2100 if they secure re-election. Launched five months ago, the program will now rely on the income tax department to verify the income of applicants. Women from families that own cars, those who have moved out of the state after marriage, and those whose names on Aadhaar cards and bank accounts do not match will be considered ineligible for future payments.
